Ninfield SGT4 and SCT& SR6 replacements
To maintain a safe and resilient electricity transmission network, National Grid has a comprehensive program for the replacement of critical assets within their transmission system. This program includes Surge Arrestors, vital components designed to safeguard high-voltage equipment, such as transformers, from overvoltage caused by lightning or switching surges. While National Grid typically handles this replacement work in-house, they have partnered with Winshall to efficiently execute these projects through their framework contractor, thereby minimizing fee-on-fee expenses.
The core objective of this self-delivery approach is twofold: to reduce construction costs and leverage National Grid's skilled workforce to execute the projects. Winshall's involvement adds substantial value, as we possess a rich understanding of National Grid's specialized expertise requirements and the precise standards to which the work must adhere. By eliminating fee-on-fee structures, we have successfully contributed to a significant reduction in the overall project cost.
Our extensive experience in adhering to National Grid's exacting standards is a testament to our commitment to excellence. At Winshall, we take full ownership of the challenges that arise during projects, using our expertise to navigate them effectively and ensure that every job reaches a successful conclusion. We are dedicated to delivering results that align seamlessly with our client’s safety and resilience objectives.
With these principles upheld, Winshall were tasked with an 18-week period of completion: comprised of 4 weeks dedicated to commissioning and a subsequent 14-week period to fully remove, replace, and install this transformer. An average Super Grid Transformer replacement would cost the client a period of 22-26 weeks, however, Winshall reduced this project timeframe by 25% whilst also achieving a 100% result on an Achilles B1 Audit.
“In terms of the benefit they provide, it’s the strength of capability and knowledge when it comes to site management and delivery of works. I don’t believe I would receive the flexibility required to deliver these kind of works from many of our other contractors. Another key point is ownership. The team seem to take pride in their work and strive to manage risks and delays to mitigate impact on the client wherever possible. It’s clear that they aspire to maintain high levels of service and value for the client” — Dave Shaw, Project Manager
